Live Poker: Favorite Kind Of Players

What's your favorite kind of live poker player?

Everyone at some point has assessed the characters around them and come up with generic personalities for each one. The "this guy" and the "that guy." Some make your blood boil while others make you laugh. Most of them make you roll your eyes and shake your head. Here are a few of my favorites.

The selective conversationalist: He'll talk to you, but only on his terms. And even weirder, it usually doesn't have anything to do with whether he's just won or lost a hand, or if there's an interesting sports game on television. Those reasons you could understand.

This seemingly random blabber will hit you up like a lonely airline passenger and start telling you his life story, then after 30 minutes, you'll ask a courtesy question just to let him know you were listening, and he inexplicably gives you the cold shoulder. Meanwhile, you've lost 2 big blinds. Could he be working you? Not likely for the scraps you're dropping. But who knows?

The hurry up and lose guy: I've seen this a bunch of times, and it always goes to show you can't play poker on someone else's schedule.

After an hour or so at any table, you establish a relationship with the other players, vocal or understood. That's one of the reasons you get "looks" sometimes after sitting down fresh at a table. You have to prove yourself for the first 10 minutes or so before being accepted.

Anyway, this is a guy who's played strong poker throughout, didn't piss anyone off, and all of a sudden he gets a call or text, and you just know it's someone saying "Let's go, we're done." So he's now on a mission to get all his chips in the middle before the next one or two big blinds come around. Even worse, you're not exactly sure how to react as a player since it's coming out of left field. The motive might say one thing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the cards. Tough call.

The exhaler: Short and simple, this is the player you can hear breathing from across the table. EVERY move, every card, every bet warrants a frustrated exhale, usually accompanied by a hard swallow. The Superbowl could be on full blast in the background and you'd still hear this guy emptying his lungs.

Of course, this is somewhat of a light-hearted look at different player types, but you will see come across each of these. Equally it does not tell anywhere near the whole story.

You can often tell the type of player you're up against by the tells they're giving off, and you should be aware of the ways that different players handle a game. They could be careful, solid players, or rash ones. Experienced or inexperienced. Easy to win from or easy to lose to.

These might be better described as different types of player styles, so they're covered in more detail on the poker player styles page.
