For me, there's nothing quite like betting on horse races as a way of getting a giant dose of excitement. The thunder of hooves on the flat, flying leaps over the jumps. Titanic battles of agility, speed, and strength between the top horses.

Making money from horse racing betting is not easy, and it's often the case that focusing your bets on the top races and racehorses gives the best chance of making a profit.

You'll find those top racehorses in individual races throughout the seasons, but one easy place to look for them are the major meetings - Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, the Cheltenham Festival, the Dubai World Cup, and of course the Breeders Cup races held each November in the US.

Here we'll take a look at betting for the Breeders Cup Classic of 2015, and some of the main contenders:

It will be a Halloween to remember for horse racing fans and bettors alike, as the Breeders’ Cup comes to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky this weekend. While the schedule is packed with intriguing races, the main event is the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Here’s a look at the favorites to win one of horse racing’s most prestigious races before you make your horse racing bets, and remember that the best odds you're likely to get on any race will be on a betting exchange:

American Pharoah (+160)

The first Triple Crown winners since Affirmed in 1978 goes for horse racing’s Grand Slam this Saturday. American Pharoah looked untouchable following his historic victory at the Belmont with a win at the Haskell Invitational, but was challenged early and couldn’t come through in the Travers Stakes in late August. The 3-year-old drew gate No. 4 for the Breeders’ Cup Classic and reports from training say American Pharoah is in fine form, exceeding the expectations of trainer Bob Baffert and running without any urging. It sounds like this horse is itching to run.

Beholder (+300)

The five-year-old mare is out to make history of her own Saturday. Beholder can become the first horse to win three separate Breeders’ Cup events if she can upset American Pharoah, having already claimed titles in the Juvenile Fillies in 2012 and the Distaff in 2013. Beholder has won six straight races going back to last September and torched the track in her five-furlong training sessions. She drew the far outside gate of No. 10, so the challenge has been put in front of Beholder.

Tonalist (+600)

The 2014 Belmont Stakes winner hasn’t finished any lower than third in 2015, picking up victories in two of those five races while finishing runner-up in two others. The 4-year-old colt has been excellent at Belmont Park, picking up five of his career six victories there, but can he replicate that success in a five-furlong race at Keeneland - especially since he drew inside gate No. 1. In his only race outside of Belmont this season, he finished third at Saratoga in early August.

Honor Code (+750)

Starting from the No. 9 gate, Honor Code has become a popular pick for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This horse has shown a flare for the dramatic, exploding down the home stretch to steal away victories. The 4-year-old colt won three of his five races this year, and is coming off a third-place showing at Belmont Park in early October. Trainer Claude R. McGaughey has plenty of Breeders’ Cup winners on his resume but not a Classic champion. Could this be the year?
